Eight Sleep
Eight Sleep, the sleep fitness company, is launching it's first wearable. The Eight Ring seamlessly integrates into the Eight Sleep App and works insync with the existing Pod, extending tracking and insights beyond sleep - providing a comprehensive overview for both sleep and wake moments. This new integration enables a range of new features and experiences.
Business Objective+
Inform users on the new wearable and integration.
Create onboarding experience for Eight Ring.
Design new features and experiences enabled by activity tracking.

Problem
Eight Sleep is to launch a competitor to the Oura ring, called the Eight Ring, that tracks your health, fitness and daytime activity. We’d like to add/integrate this new product into our existing Eight Sleep app experience.

Solution
Create an in-app experience that “integrates” the new product into our member’s Eight Sleep app journey. This experience should be fun, show off the ‘intelligence’ of our product, and help consumers improve their sleep/health or elevate their performance.

Process
For this case study, I used the Double Diamond Framework to guide my focus throughout the design process, ensuring I am designing the right thing, and designing that thing right.

Discover
Getting to know
the Sleep Athlete.
While I was unable to conduct actual user research for this project, I simulated it by researching competitor products and learning current eight sleep user base. I then made assumptions for the insights I would have learned during this stage of the process.
User Research
Assumptions

Avoid Disruption Eight Sleep has already created a passionate core community, and users love the current eight sleep app experience.

Passive Data Is Better Users want to avoid a wearable when they can, especially while sleeping. Oura ring users said one of their biggest pain points was wearing the ring while the slept.

Higher Level Less Granular While some users like to take a deep look at specific metrics, the majority felt this data was too complex and they didn't understand.

Combined Insights Users tend to seek a combined overview, offering highlevel insights, rather than looking at inidividual metrics in isolation.

Define
User Value Proposition
To effectively communicate value to the user, we create a narrative for unlocking your full potential. We frame this with an overarching message of Personalized Performance, backed by supporting value propositions tailored for insightful data, optimized recovery, and ease-of-use.

Define Success and Solution
Define what successful solution looks like based on insights (assumptions) gained from the research. I wrote these out as goals that I would keep in mind throughout the next phases of the design process.

Develop
References
We researched solutions that solve adjacent challenges, identifying concepts we could leverage for functionality, flow, and aesthetics. By analyzing other successful apps, we gained insights into effective design elements and best practices

Brainstorming
Brainstormed ideas on how to organize the content, preview features, and show new metrics now that the app was tracking both Wake and Sleep metrics.

Site Map
We created a site map to define the app's structure and organize its features. This visual layout ensured a logical flow, making navigation intuitive and seamless. .

User Flow
To visualize the integration we create a user flow diagram showing how the new device integrates into the existing app. We map this from multiple start points depending on the user’s situation while highlighting key touch points along the way.

Deliver
Design System
Apply the 8 sleep design system, and add new patterns and logics where needed.

Final Designs
To visualize the integration we create a user flow diagram showing how the new device integrates into the existing app. We map this from multiple start points depending on the user’s situation while highlighting key touch points along the way.

Discoverability
To ensure users discover the new features and product offerings, we take a variety of approaches. in-app, external marketing comms, and the physical product itself. This blend of digital and physical touchpoints, allows Eight Sleep to communicate with the users in several mediums on several channels.

IAMs

In App Messages, such as alerts, pop-ups, and other non-intrusive notifications that inform the user of new features and updates.
Gated Content

Showing features of the app that would be unlocked with the ring allows users to preview what the full experience will offer.
Onboarding
Eight Sleep has already created a well designed onboarding flow for the Pod. Continuing with this logic to create a step-by-step flow for connecting the Eight Ring to the app.

Insights & Statistics
Now that the app is tracking more than just sleep, we need to adjust the informational hierarchy. The goal is to allow users to easily access these new insights, while maintaining an experience they are already familiar with.

Home

The updated Home screen will provide an overview of combined Sleep and Wake scores. Users can scroll to see a quick view of Sleep specific stats and a Wake specific stats.
Stats

An updated Stats screen will now allow users to toggle between detailed reports for both Sleep metrics and Wake metrics.
Routines

The updated Routines screen will now allow users to add Sleep Routines as well as Wake Routines. User’s will be able to select activity type and track their performance. User’s will have the option to share feedback after each activity or just have it passively monitored.
Gameify

Daily/Weekly/Monthly Challenges, Achievements, Milestones, and Streaks.

Gamifying an experience not only adds an element of fun but creates deeper engagement and a sense of community. Becoming more than just sleep tracking app, but a platform for a shared adventure towards better sleep and overall wellness.
Measuring Success
Define KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) for User Engagement, Feature Adoption Rates, and (most importantly) Improvement in User Sleep Quality (compared to those with no ring) & Improvement in User Daily Performance.

Collect User Feedback through surveys or in-app feedback mechanisms.

Conclusion

SUMMARY
Introducing an additional device to track activity outside of sleep seems to open massive opportunities for the Eight Sleep App. While doing so it becomes essential to create scalable user experiences, design logic, and informational hierarchy. As the app’s features grow it is important to have some finesse, maintain consistency, and gradually transition users to next iterations.

OPINION
Most of this feature set and logic appears it can be achieved with much lower lift and faster implementation. By integrating with a third party product like the Apple watch using HealthKit API & WatchConnectivity Framework, you can immediately start syncing activity data and optimizing the new experience. This approach not only would be cost/time effective, but also serve as valuable practice and testing, laying the groundwork for future wearable Eight Sleep hardware releases.

CONSIDERATION
Adding features that not all users will have access to can motivate them to adopt, but it can also drive them away. Providing users with the option to hide unused features/modules ensures they can continue enjoy their current experience without any disruption. This user-centric approach creates a sense of control and personalization, empowering individuals to tailor their app experience based on their preferences.
